Westminster Television School is a part of the University of Westminster Media, Arts & Design faculty, that specializes in teaching television production to students at Bachelor of Arts undergraduate level. The course is taught at the university's Harrow campus, alongside the rest of the University's media production courses.

The principle lecturer and course leader is Jane Thorburn, with Rob Benfield and Ged Magiure as senior lecturers.

BA Television Course

The Television course specialises in a range of production genres including Entertainment, Documentary, Comedy, Performance and Promotional shorts. The course's production lectures are taught by industry professionals with experience in directing, producing and editing drama, music, arts and entertainment, childrens' television and factual programming.

The analysis part of the course is taught by lecturers whose published research was recently awarded the highest research rating in the UK. Through the analysis modules students gain an important understanding of how the industry is structured and how it is developing.

Course Structure

The course is taught over a period of 3 years, with the first year providing students the basics of television production through the medium of television soap drama.

In the second year, modules concern collaborative productions, such as multi-camera live music shows, in purpose built studio environments. Students also collaborate on documentaries, creative videos, and promotional shorts. Television drama is a developing part of the course and students often work on shows in collaboration with other courses such as Commercial music and Journalism.

Practice Course Breakdown

First Year - television soap drama.

Second Year - Documentary [1], studio multi-camera entertainment [2], creative video [3] and promotional shorts (adverts)[4].

Third Year - Documentary and multi-camera entertainment.

Course Aims

The course is designed to give students the experience of working on a variety of types of programme formats and in creating a wide range of content.

Second year students can opt to spend one semester abroad. The course has established exchange agreements with Universities in Australia, Canada and America as well as other parts of the world.

As part of the course students undertake several work placements and internships at organisations such as; ITV, GMTV, Discovery Channel and Endemol.

Awards & Acheivements

The course's BA Television students secured all three nominations for the Entertainment category of the Royal Television Society Student Awards 2010. The first prize was won for the Comedy Mock Documentary 'Me and My Life- 2 Years On [http://www.youtube.com/wmintelevision#p/f/10/9rkezFl-Woc"

The other nominations were for Mu:Zone 2009- The Hammelburg Experience Documentary [5] and 'OSTN-London Calling' a live Multi-Camera event Show casing talent in the University transmitted live to Ohio. [6]
