My name is Haziq Rosli, a Malaysian scholar at the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM). My interests encompass contemporary politics and history. My journey as a Wikipedia editor began on September 18, 2015, from which I have made over 1600 edits. My contributions to editing pertain to subjects in which I am passionate, amongst which include football, history, politics, and Islam.
Personal life
editBorn in Selangor to a middle-class family rooted in Malaysian politics, I descend from the noble bloodline of Megat Terawis, the inaugural holder of the title of Bendahara of Perak and progenitor of the Megat bloodline. My grandfather, Megat Jaafar, inherited the title of Orang Kaya Besar Maharaja Diraja - one of the Four High Nobles (Orang Besar Empat) of Perak, a title equivalent to Dukes in European peerages, serving underneath the Sultan. His father before him, Megat Yunus, preceded the same title, though he was more politically active, being a founder of UMNO Perak alongside Panglima Bukit Gantang, the first Menteri Besar of Perak.
Politics
editThroughout my youth, I was instilled with a profound interest in the politics of Malaysia alongside the fields of history and political science. My passion was greatly owed to my father, who himself was a former politician in his youth. Likewise, my father was once a grassroots leader within the UMNO Youth, though similar to many within the party's rank and file, he had left UMNO alongside the Deputy Prime Minister and the party's then Deputy President, Anwar Ibrahim, in the aftermath of Reformasi. Typical of a Malay household, I was raised with a strong adherence to conservative customs. As such, my political beliefs can likewise be defined by the traditional right-wing: paternalistic conservatism, Malay nationalism, Islamism, alongside strong emphasis towards anti-corruption. Perhaps untypical of right-wingers, my strand of conservatism features a statist, protectionist, and populist view of economic policy, reflecting the wider collectivist nature of Malay society, including a strong rejection of individualism and lassez-faire economics alongside skepticism of corporate trusts and monopolies. My inspirations growing up include Anwar Ibrahim, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Amin al-Husseini, Salahuddin al-Ayyubi, Mehmed the Conqueror, Theodore Roosevelt, Oswald Mosley and Otto von Bismarck. Admiration is also held towards Jeremy Corbyn, Bernie Sanders, and Jean-Luc Melenchon despite policy disagreements. On a personal note, I am a close acquaintance of Ahmad Ali Karim, a conservative writer and fellow scholar at IIUM's Political Science Department.
Football
editSince my childhood, I have grown a particular passion for football. Thus, I have been invested in many clubs ever since I was a young boy. Though many factors may be cause for my interest in a club, it would oftentimes pertain to a club's culture and history. Thus, I would grow up to support popular clubs with a robust culture and history, such as my country's own Selangor FC alongside Manchester United and Real Madrid. Likewise, I have a distaste for corporate and corrupt clubs, such as Manchester City, Barcelona, and local rivals Johor Darul Ta'zim. Listed below are the football clubs which I currently take interest:
Favourite quotes
editListed below are some of my favorite quotes from famous figures, most of whom are political, religious, and military leaders, and showcase a presentation of the beliefs and values I uphold.
“I have been given the authority over you, and I am not the best of you. If I do well, help me; and if I do wrong, set me right. Sincere regard for truth is loyalty and disregard for truth is treachery. The weak amongst you shall be strong with me until I have secured his rights, if God wills; and the strong amongst you shall be weak with me until I have wrested from him the rights of others, if God wills. Obey me so long as I obey God and His Messenger. But if I disobey God and His Messenger, you owe me no obedience. Arise for your prayer, God have mercy upon you."
“I will be harsh and stern against the aggressor, but I will be a pillar of strength for the weak."
"The weakest man is the one who is able to correct his moral defects, but doesn't take action. "
"The mosques are our barracks, the domes our helmets, the minarets our bayonets and the faithful our soldiers."
— Ziya Gökalp, as quoted by Recep Tayyip Erdogan
"People can harp upon issues of race or religion, to me, it's completely irrelevant. It's a way and attempt by political leaders to disguise and hijack the central issues of governance in this country. They are going to appeal to the race, including the Malays, that their position, their power base is challenged."
"Whatever our Lord says, whatever our beloved Prophet says, we shall follow that path."
“Your nafs is your first battlefield. If you are victorious over it, then you will find the other battlefields easier.”
