Sultan Hairun Jamilu was the 6th sultan of Ternate who was stabbed to death by Martim Afonso Pimentel, cousin of the Portuguese captain of Ternate Diogo Lopes de Mesquita on 28 February 1570 during a negotiation in Fort São João Baptista de Ternate. The death of Sultan Hairun sparked anger among Muslim Moluccans, the son of the deceased Sultan, who was now Sultan Baabullah of Ternate revenged on the Portuguese by besieging their forts and strongholds for five years until their surrender on 15 July 1575, which eventually led to their expulsion.
