Jeff Friedl (born February 25, 1980)[2] is an American drummer as well as a co-founder of The Beta Machine,[3] currently based in Los Angeles, California. Friedl has recorded, performed, and toured with musical acts such as A Perfect Circle, Ashes Divide, Puscifer, Devo, and ShadowParty.[4]

Early life edit

At the age of six, Friedl and his family moved from West Virginia[5] to Tuscon, Arizona, where he began playing and studying drums at age 11.[6] Friedl attended and graduated from Catalina Foothills High School.[5] After playing with many successful bands throughout Arizona, Friedl moved to Los Angeles, California in 2004 to begin doing session work along with taking local live gigs and tours.[7]

Career edit

Friedl joined Ashes Divide in 2008, a project by A Perfect Circle guitarist, Billy Howerdel. He toured in support of their first album, Keep Telling Myself It's Alright. This tour also included Matt McJunkins on bass, Jonathan Radtke on lead guitar, and Adam Monroe on keys.[8][9] The band have been mostly inactive since this tour, though Friedl did perform at their stand alone 2013 show.[10]

Friedl participated in Puscifer's, a band by Maynard James Keenan (of Tool and A Perfect Circle), first shows, on February 13, 14 and 15, 2009.[11] Friedl continued to perform with Puscifer until 2018.[12]

It was announced in the summer of 2011 that Josh Freese would be unavailable to tour with APC, due to a scheduling conflict with Weezer.[13] An announcement followed that stated that Friedl would be taking over the tour for Freese.[14] Friedl has continued with A Perfect Circle to the present.[15]

In 2008, Friedl joined Devo as touring replacement for Josh Freese,[16] who was touring with Weezer. Friedl continued to tour with Devo until 2014.[17] He played with Devo again at Desert Daze festival in 2020.[18] He again played with them on their 2023.[19]

In 2012, Friedl became the new drummer for Filter,[20] touring with them in 2012[21] and 2013.[22]

In 2015, Friedl toured with Eagles of Death Metal.[23]

He is also part of The Beta Machine, with Matt McJunkins (bass, vocals, keyboards), Claire Acey (vocals) and Nicholas Perez (guitar, keyboards).[24]

In 2016 he won the Drummies Artist award in the alternative category.[25][26]
