Damian Iorio
editBorn in London, in a family of Italian and English musicians, Damian Iorio studied conducting in St Petersburg after completing violin studies in Britain and the USA.
Damian Iorio regularly conducts orchestras such as the London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, Estonian National Symphony, St Petersburg Philharmonic and Iceland Symphony Orchestras.
Highlights in the 2010-2011 season include return visits to Het Gelders Orkest, Orchestra Sinfonica Giuseppe Verdi in Milan and his debut with Aarhus Symphony Orchestra. Recent highlights include his debut with Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and the Prague Philharmonia, as well as a production of La Boheme in Italy.
Iorio’s work on the international opera scene include performances of Verdi’s “Macbeth” at Glyndebourne Festival Opera, and Smetana’s “The Bartered Bride” at Opera de Paris. His recent US debut at Central City Opera, Denver with Britten’s “The Rape of Lucretia” was much acclaimed by the international press. He has collaborated on numerous occasions with Norwegian Opera and also conducted at many of the Italian opera houses.
From 1999 to 2005, Iorio was Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Murmansk, with which he has toured Russia and Scandinavia. Iorio’s work in Russia also includes the third ever production in Russia of Britten’s “The Turn of the Screw” in St Petersburg, and the Russian premiere in Moscow of Michael Nyman’s opera “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat”, which was nominated for Best Opera Production at the prestigious 2004 Golden Mask Festival.
International festivals in which Iorio has appeared include the Esterhazy Haydn Festival (conducting Haydn in the same palace where Haydn wrote many of his most important works), Bratislava Festival, Musical Olympus Festival in St Petersburg and Tivoli Festival in Copenhagen.
Iorio also enjoys working with young musicians and has conducted many youth orchestras in Europe. He is currently Resident Conductor of National Youth Strings Academy, a specialist string chamber orchestra in the UK for talented young string players.
In 2006 Damian was bestowed the title Knight of the Order of Sant’Agata, Republic of San Marino, in recognition of his services to music in that state.
