MIRCEA CRISTE Mircea Criste (born 27 August 1957 in Reșița) is a Romanian former magistrate and university professor. BIOGRAPHY He studied law at the Faculty of Law in Cluj-Napoca in Transylvania. He obtained the PhD title in Constitutional Law at the University of Aix-Marseille, with first class honours. Mircea Criste is a professor at the West University of Timișoara and a former professor at the University "1 December 1918" of Alba Iulia (Transylvania) and several private universities[1]. In 1997, after 50 years of military leadership, he became the first civilian director general of the penitentiary system, initiating a process of reforms that has continued to this day. After a career as a judge (Court of Appeal of Timișoara), he was Prosecutor General of Romania, between 1998 and 2001. His name is linked to the beginning of several reforms of the Public Prosecutor's Office: young prosecutors were appointed to directives positions, at all levels, on the basis of competence; the operative groups were formed, which were later transformed into the famous National Anticorruption Directorate; the monocratic leadership of the Public Prosecutor's Office has been renounced in favour of a management committee; judicial review of prosecutors' actions was introduced; a project for the introduction of the judicial police has been initiated; the system has been computerized; cooperation with public prosecutors in other countries has been promoted; Several so-called "heavy" cases, which had been dragging on for some time, were finally dealt with. After the political change with the elections at the end of 2000 and the return of former communists, Mircea Criste was released from his post and appointed ambassador to Macedonia (2001-2004). Since 2014 he has been Deputy to the Romanian Ombudsman (People's Advocate)[2].
