A joint endeavor between the City of Milwaukee and Harbor District Inc., construction on Slosh Park is anticipated to begin in Spring 2018. [1] The area is located on the end of East Greenfield Avenue in Milwaukee Wisconsin and across the river from Jones' Island. [2] University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee: School of Freshwater Sciences is adjacent to the site.
Description
editA design charrette was held October 2015 and the public voted on one with open green space and access to the river. [3]
The park is planned to provide a publicly accessible boat launch for kayaking and canoeing on the Kinnickinnic River in Milwaukee's inner harbor. A Seiche Garden water fountain and decorative art wall will add to the aesthetics and a playground made out of re-purposed shipping container will be available for children to play on. [4]
Natural History
editBefore the City of Milwaukee was created the area was a vast marshland with abundant stores of wild rice . Black ash, Cedar and Tamarack swamps were fond throughout.[5] Commerce through the waterways evolved the land into a industrial hub.[6] The location is in proximity to the former Milwaukee Solvay Coke and Gas Company and was used for industrial purposes, such as coal storage and coke production until 1983.[7]
