George Gilman Rushby 1900 – 1968
editGeorge Gilman Rushby was born in England and died in Africa. He was an elephant hunter, poacher, prospector, farmer, forestry officer, and Game Ranger. He was the leading elephant hunter of the 20th Century. He was responsible for the hunting down of The Man-eaters of Njombe - a pride of lions that had killed and devoured over 1500 people reputedly under the influence of a witchdoctor named Matamula Mangera. George Rushby was the subject of several biographies listed below, and the subject of the BBC Natural History Unit Drama Documentary, staring Adrian Rawlins, called “The Man-eating Lions of Njombe.” Broadcast on BBC2 in July 2005.
