Harvey Kronberg, Texas political journalist

Harvey Kronberg (b. 1950) is a prominent figure in Texas politics and journalism, known for his role as owner and editor of the Quorum Report, a widely respected online publication covering Texas politics. Kronberg's nonpartisan journalism and his accurate insider's coverage of Texas politics established him as required reading for the Austin political establishment. In 2005, Texas Monthly named Kronberg as one of the 25 most powerful people in Texas politics. [1] [2] [3]

Quorum Report edit

Harvey Kronberg began his Texas politics career as a contract writer for the Quorum Report in 1989. Founded in 1983, the publication is Texas' oldest political insiders newsletter.[1] The Quorum Report is known as a source for reliable information and analysis on Texas politics.

In 1998, Kronberg acquired the Quorum Report when the newsletter was a biweekly publication and had only six hundred subscribers.[2]

Kronberg transformed the Quorum Report into the first exclusively online subscriber based publication covering Texas politics and government, targeted to the political professional.[3] In one month the Web site received 200,000 hits.[2]

His pioneering online political publishing captured national attention. Kronberg had transformed it into a political powerhouse, publishing breaking news in real time. By 2005, Texas Monthly declared Kronberg one of the 25 most powerful people in Texas politics and dubbed him the 'Capitol's scribe'.[1][2]

Although initial snubbed by the Capitol press corps, Kronberg realized he was effective when Bob Bullock called him in 1994 to berate him for being "a sorry excuse for a journalist."[2] Eventually Bullock recognized Kronberg as "the Capitol's most astute observer".[3]

The Quorum Report became required reading for Austin politicos. It remains a go-to source for those seeking reliable information and analysis on Texas political affairs.[2]

Early life edit

Kronberg is from Houston and graduated from Bellaire High School in 1968, then went to University of Texas at Austin. In 1970-71 he did the Junior Year Abroad Program at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. In 1972 he graduated University of Texas at Austin, with Honors in Plan II, Special Honors in History. After graduation, he worked for several years as a licensed auctioneer and by his own account he "worked really hard at being a hippie," reading Marx, and peddling clothes at flea markets. However, within a few years he had become a committed businessman, with a strong interest in politics.[2][3]

He and his wife Michele have been together since 1975.[4]

Professional life edit

In addition to owning and operating the Quorum Report, Kronberg founded the Texas Energy Report, an online publication focusing on the intersection of government, politics and energy in Texas.[3][4]

He and his wife, Michele, started the Austin Flag and Flagpole company in 1986. It is the largest full service flagpole company in Central Texas.[1]

Kronberg is also a political analyst for Spectrum News. Kronberg makes regular appearances on the channel's Capital Tonight program and also appeared in weekly political commentary show, "On the Agenda," when the network was owned by TimeWarner. [4]
