This is a list of Venezuela's representatives and their placements at the Big Four international beauty pageants.[1] Venezuela, widely considered a beauty pageant powerhouse with an extensive and successful history in beauty pageants, is also referred as the most powerful country in beauty pageants,[2][3] has won in all four pageants multiple times, with a total of 133 placements and 23 victories, counting:
- Seven — Miss Universe titles (1979 • 1981 • 1986 • 1996 • 2008 • 2009 • 2013)
- Six — Miss World titles (1955 • 1981 • 1984 • 1991 • 1995 • 2011)
- Eight — Miss International titles (1985 • 1997 • 2000 • 2003 • 2006 • 2010 • 2015 • 2018)
- Two — Miss Earth titles (2005 • 2013)
Hundreds of beauty pageants are conducted yearly, but the Big Four are considered the most prestigious, widely covered and broadcast by media.[4][5] Various news agencies collectively refer to the four major pageants as "Big Four" namely: Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International and Miss Earth.[6][7]
National franchises and organizations
editVenezuela franchise holders of the four major beauty pageants are:
- Gabriela Isler, Jacqueline Aguilera, Nina Sicilia and Jonathan Blum (Grupo Cisneros) – Miss Venezuela Organization for Miss Universe Venezuela, Miss World Venezuela and Miss International Venezuela.[8]
- Prince Julio César and Alyz Henrich (Miss Earth Venezuela Organization) – Miss Earth Venezuela.[9]
The criteria for the Big Four inclusion are based on specific standards such as the pageant's international prominence and prestige accepted by mainstream media; the quality and quantity of crowned delegates recognized by international franchisees; the winner's post pageant activities; the pageant's longevity, consistency, and history; the execution of the pageant's specific cause, platform, and advocacy; the overall pre-pageant activities, production quality and global telecast; the enormity of internet traffic; and the extent of popularity across the globe.[10]
History
editOn May 7, 1905, Manuela Victoria Mujica Antich, representative of the Lara state, was elected by popular vote as the first Miss Venezuela. Many authors and scholars of the history of the Miss Venezuela pageant consider her as the first Miss Venezuela that existed and that vote as a precursor to the pageant as it is known today.[11]
National pageants
editThe following are national pageants which serve as qualifiers for the Big Four pageants.
Miss Venezuela
editThe Miss Venezuela pageant was officially founded in 1952 by Pan Am, together with the businesswoman Gloria Sánchez, for the advertising and tourism purpose of sending a Venezuelan representative to the Miss Universe pageant, in Long Beach, California, United States, which had It was created that same year by the Pacific Mills Company to promote its new bikini brand Catalina's.
Miss World Venezuela
editMiss Venezuela World (in Spanish: Miss Venezuela Mundo) was a contest with a recognizable national acceptance. The owners of the contest were the Cisneros Organization and the Miss Venezuela Organization, whose president was Osmel Sousa. The bearer of the title represented Venezuela in the Miss World. The pageant was formally held until 2015; two years later it is again incorporated into the main pageant, Miss Venezuela.
For 2018, the winner of Miss Venezuela, Isabella Rodríguez, was the one who represented the country in the Miss World 2019 pageant.
In 2020, the current administration of the Miss Venezuela Organization announced that the pageant would be held under the name of Miss Venezuela World.
Miss Earth Venezuela
editParticipation in international pageant competitions
editWith 23 victorious titles, Venezuela has reputedly won more than any other country in pageantry. Venezuela is also the first and only country to win all the four pageants multiple times. Venezuela has twice won two Big Four crowns in one year, winning Miss Universe 1981 and Miss World 1981 and then Miss Universe 2013 and Miss Earth 2013. In the past, the main organiser for Venezuelan pageants was the former famed beauty queen maker, Osmel Sousa. The current National Director is Gabriela Isler, Miss Universe 2013.
