Simon Woolf (born 10th August 1954 in London) is an English jazz bassist, pianist and arranger A lyrical double-bassist in the tradition of Red Mitchell, Simon Woolf achieved early success as a boy singer. A late starter on bass, Simon Woolf took up both electric & acoustic instruments during the final year of a music degree course at York University, exploring free improvisation and soul music as well as arranging and playing for a more conventional jazz quintet. Re-locating in London, Simon Woolf developed his jazz playing under the tutelage of Tristano disciple Peter Ind while pursuing a varied career as a free-lance bassist, primarily in West End theatre appearing on-stage in the Cy Coleman musical ‘I Love My Wife’ and Richard Eyre’s stage production of ‘High Society’. Woolf has worked in bands led by Don Rendell Bill le Sage Bobby Wellins Peter Jacobsen Geoff Simkins Dave Cliff and, since 1994 with Andy Panayi in his eponymous quartet, featuring trombonist Mark Nightingale Further studies with bassist Michael Moore led to associations with Ruby Braff George van Eps Howard Alden & Harry Allen Woolf composes and arranges for his own five & six piece groups & has recently appeared at Ronnie Scott’s club with his own quintet and with Benny Golson
