Badlands Unlimited is a New York-based independent publisher founded by artist Paul Chan in 2010. The company claims to be among the first publishers to publish the writings and works of emerging and established artists in the ebook medium.

Chan considers Badlands as not only a press but also a publishing experiment. He has written:

"Historical distinctions between books, files, and artworks are dissolving rapidly. We publish and produce new works by artists and writers that embody the spirit of this emerging dissolution. We make books in an expanded field."[1]

Publications edit

Badlands Unlimited published Marcel Duchamp: The Afternoon Interviews, a collection of interviews with Marcel Duchamp unearthed by Duchamp biographer Calvin Tomkins. The book marks the first new primary material to surface on Duchamp in over 20 years. [2]

In 2012, Badlands published On Democracy by Saddam Hussein, an obscure collection of essays on the subject of democracy written by the infamous dictator before his presidency in the late 1970s.[3]

In 2013, Badlands published AD BOOK by net-art collective BFFA3AE, an ebook containing only the e-advertisements that funded the ebook's production.[4]

Also in 2013, Badlands published Fires of Siberia, a romance novel based on the life of Tea Party Congresswoman Michele Bachmann.[5]

Badlands claims to have published the first art exhibition as interactive e-book, entitled How to Download a Boyfriend. The New Yorker wrote a profile, describing it as the "first-ever group show in the form of an e-book for the iPad [6]

Other notable publications include Poems by Yvonne Rainer [7], Made in USA by Bernedette Corporation,[8] Phaedrus Pron by Paul Chan,[9] and Mans in the Mirrors, the first 3D ebook made under the influence of mescaline.[10]

Controversy edit

Badlands and publisher Paul Chan have been accused of plotting to destroy the market of analog printed art books.[11] Publisher's Weekly clarified that, "...much has changed within the last three years, and the mantra at Badlands—that “historical distinctions between books, files, and artworks are dissolving rapidly”—is less an iconoclastic platform and more the current state of reality."[12]
