The Sappa Creek massacre was a massacre of a party of Cheyenne people by the U.S. Army that took place on April 23, 1875, where parts of the H Company of the Sixth Cavalry at Sappa Creek, led by 2nd Lieutenant Austin Henely, was ordered by Henely to intercept the party and return them to the Southern Cheyenne Reservation if they surrendered, and if they did not, they were given authorization to fight. The party was joined by buffalo hunters, and a fight ensued. Two troopers were killed, but the army gained a victory.[1] The massacre is part of the Plains Wars.
