Uploading and annotating KOGL images to commons

Abstract/description

Uploading images from public sites can be a complex task.

Uploading from most sites (unlike Flickr and iNaturalist which have the tools Flickr to Commons, iNaturalist to commons) remains a daunting task for many wikimedians, because of the following necessary tasksː

1. Need to know the licence &
2. how to enter it
3. the date (if none given, use {{unknown|date}}
4. use "depicts" (structured data) if possible
5. add categories
6. add to wikidata if possible

I will look at the licensing from two Korean sites which make images freely available, and adding all the necessary parts to permit uploading. The sites used are: Korean Cultural Heritage Administration and Encyclopedia of Korean Culture and the corresponding licence templates are {{KOGL|문화재청}} and {{KOGL|한국문화백과사전}} (Korean Open Government Licence followed by the attribution for the image). I will demonstrate the task of downloading a Korean public image and uploading it to commons for these two Korean websites, via a query to find Korean heritage items that have no wikidata image (P18).

(I recommend keeping the images in a private category to permit you to find them easily and if necessary update groups of them. For example, one cannot upload an image without its date of creation date. However there were numerous Korean images I wished to upload which had no creation date. In desperation, I put 2015. Later I found the template {{unknown|date}} and amended a number of images at the same time. Having them in a group made this easier to do. Similarly, I made an error when I first used the KOGL template, having failed to realise that the Hangul string following KOGL was the attribution, and again I needed to amend the metadata for several image files.)

Collaboration beyond the horizon

Images are missing for many wiki pages across many wikis. Thus whatever one's native language

1. The capacity and confidence to upload appropriately licensed images from public sites is a useful skill, as is
2. making the images accessible, via "depicts" in commons, wikidata and categorisation. (Categorisation is best pursued after the uploading process.)

Other sites with useful images with appropriate licences are GBIF (occurrence data), the Korean folk museum, Museums Victoria,... And in presenting this I expect to learn of sites in other languages with non-Roman scripts which also have useful images with appropriate licensing.

Being present in person will allow conversations and further collaboration with the Korean wiki community, and other language communities fo further pursue the use of publicly available images. '

• At the end of the session, participants will be

1. able to upload images from public sites, and make them accessible
2. aware of the public licensing of images by Korean public agencies, and in particular of the images available at Korean Cultural Heritage Administration and Ëncyclopedia of Korean Culture

• Ideally, we should get a GBIF occurrence image to commons tool, as well as encykor to commons, and KCHA to commons tools (English & Korean versions)

My physical presence at ESEAP2024 will permit interactions with other participants outside the formal presentations, and hence make possible the interchange & dissemination of ideas to make language wikis like kowiki less of a 'silo'.
