as far as I know, the etymology of the word CHICANO is not known. There are two theories, as I wrote. I'd have to look up my sources. Do you have other information about it?

I've found a couple of sites that contain information about the word.

b) etymonline.com argues that the word may have been influenced by the Spanish word 'chico' which seems pretty doubtful to me
I think the theory with 'chicana' = harrassment is rather weak (I'll try to find a site that features it afterwards); whereas the theory accordîng to which it derives from MEXICANO sounds pretty convincing to me, because México/Mexicano used to have an English sh sound in Old Spanish = /S/; which is closer to Modern Spanish CH (note that Modern Spanish uses CH for the SH sound; and some forms of Spanish even pronounce CH like an English SH sound.)

Maybe I've first read about it there... Maybe we should in fact change the article. Maybe linking Chicano with chicanear is just folk etymology. Easily explainable, too, because some people still see Chicano as a negative term... What do you think? Wathiik 21:34, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
