Makhdoom (Arabic: ?????, meaning one who is served) is a branch of Makhtab second Makhadm is a word in Arabic script meaning of Teacher of Sunnah. Muslim Sufi title in South Asia and Central Asia.

This title is now used by the descendants of the Sufi masters who are mostly Pirs, politicians and Teacher of Sunnah in southern Punjab and Sindh in Pakistan. Hazrat Abbas, respectable paternal uncle of Prophet Muhammad, usually visited Mecca and Medina. Prophet Muhammad received him and always addressed him with the title of Makhdoom where they served . in Punjab and Sindh provinces of Pakistan use this title as sacerdotal dignity no references in this regard.

A Makhdoom is generally a respectable person who dedicated his life to Islam, the Quran and the Sunnah. However, now this title is commonly misused by modern Pakistani politicians without any legitimacy.[citation needed]

History

edit

The Makhdoom clan derives its name from Makhdoom Burhanuddin who was born around the 13th century AD. His family tree indicates that he was a descendant of Qutb Shah through his son Muhammad Zaman Ali Shah (famous as Khokhar). Qutb Shah is one of the descendant of Hazrat Ali (R.A) through his son Hazrat Abbas.

Hazrat Makhdoom Burhanuddin and his friend Hazrat Syed Shahabal Shah were instructed by Hazrat Baba Fariduddin Ganjshakar to go to Sahiwal in the Sargodha District, for preaching of Islam in 12th century. The saints went there and they started to preach the people. Many people of that area became Muslim on the hand of these saints. Both saints are great Alim of Islam. They established a Darsgah at Sahiwal District Sargodha for giving Islamic education to the students and preaching of Islam. After few years, the both Saints left this place and went to Village which has been known as Langar Makhdoom on the name of Hazrat Makhdoom Burhanuddin (famous as Langar Makhdoom). Both saints started preaching of Islam there and again many peoples of that area becomes Muslim on their hands. After their arrival at Langar Makhdoom entire area appears to have been blessed by mercy and blessings of Almighty Allah. Hazrat Langar Makhdoom died in Langar Makhdoom in 1245 CE (666 Hijri). He was buried in his mud dwelling hut according to his last will in Makhdoom Grave Yard near Changranwala Village of Tehsile Lalian,District Chiniot.
