Computer simulation holds an important role in soft condensed matter research. A variety of techniques are used that typically depend on the length scale of interest, although multiscale modeling approaches that seek to relate material response between length scales have become increasingly common due to advances in computational power.

Regardless of the technique used, soft condensed matter systems pose a challenge to model and simulate. This is because the behavior of these systems is highly sensitive to the length and timescales in which they are studied, with nonlinearity being exhibited in even the most simple cases.

In principle, any technique that can be used to solve partial differential equations numerically can be applied to problems in soft matter physics. Popular approaches include the finite element method and |finite difference schemes.
