Chapter one begins with a newspaper article titled "WEDDING SUPRISE OF THE YEAR" informing the public of the marriage of Actors Greta Woolston and Bruno di Blase. Then transfers to Officers Nick Calabrese (brother of Lou Calabrese) and Gerard West arresting a junkie and discussing the article, as Officer Calabrese informs Officer West that the guy in the article was his sisters boyfriend.The book then shifts to Eleanor Townsend(mother of Jack Townsend) reading the article and finding out that after the wedding was announced on the evening news that in the hotel room where her son Jack Townsend was staying at the time, a door was shattered, fist- sized hole were in the wall and a couch had been set on fire. Eleanor Townsend convincing herself and her butler that her son would never be that childish.
