"La Luz" (English: The Light) is a song composed and recorded by the Colombian singer-songwriter Juanes, released as the lead single from his upcoming studio album on December 16, 2013.

Background

After the success for his second live album, MTV Unplugged (2012), the singer decided get back to the studio. At the Grammy Awards of 2013, Juanes presented and performed totally in English, singing "Your Song" of Elton John, being the first time watch Juanes singing a song in other language.[1] This presentation caught the attention for many fans and journalist, about the possibilty for record his next studio album in English.[2] On November in the same year, Juanes with Carlos Santana presented the category of Album of the Year at the Latin Grammy Awards of 2013, they performed "La Flaca", original song for the Spanish rock band Jarabe de Palo, four days later released the song as the first single from the twenty-third studio album of Santana. In December 11, Juanes uploaded a video via Facebook, talking about of the new single from his upcoming album.[3] Then in Twitter, showed the official cover for "La Luz" (The Light) and the date that will be released.

Music and lyrics

The song was composed by Juanes and co-produced by him nad the American producer Steve Lillywhite.

A bilingual version of the song was released, featuring the Brazilian singer Claudia Leitte. Later was included for the brazilian and portuguese version of the album Loco de Amor (2014).

Critical reception

Following its release, "La Luz" received some reviews from music critics. Thom Jurek of Allmusic, said that the song "melds 21st century EDM" with the "Colombian cumbia and Latin alt-rock", in a driving with "infectious dancefloor groover", and praised the vocal performance from Juanes, when he refers about his "killer falsetto".[4] Hector Aviles of Latin Music Café, compared the song with "Yerbatero", said that have a similar in the "fast beat and high energy with simplistic lyrics". Aviles added that the song mixes the electronica with Colombian folk, within a pop-rock style, also said that is innovative but musicality doesn't offer much.[5]

Commercial performance

"La Luz", debuted in Colombia at number three on the National-Report chart on the week of December 16, 2013.[6] In the United States, the song debuted at number 27 on the Billboard Latin Pop Songs chart and received the "Greatest Gainer", in Billboard Latin Tropical Airplay at number 39.[7]

In October 30, Juanes posted a photo on Instagram where was shooting his new music video, caused curiosity from the fans, and begin the rumors about the coming of a new single. Three days later Juanes upload the music video of "La Luz" in December 18, in his VEVO account, receiving 400k views the first day. The music video was shot in the streets around Cartagena, was directed by jajajaja and patrocined by Pepsi and Line.

Synopsis

The music video begins with Juanes walking in the streets of Cartagena, while comunicate with a friends in his smartphone, asked them where are they. They walked to a energy center, and call to some kids, more later lights off the fusiles of light, and the neigborhood the lights out. Then, show a scene where Juanes walks on the street and begin to sing the song, around Juanes there are many people, talking, dancing, and playing with fireworks, after show the singer perform with a guitar in a building lonely. During all the music video, there is a party, people dancing in gruopus and Juanes singing in the center, and a beautiful women that coquetea during the party. The video finish with the party

Live performances

The song was performed live for the first time in Antofagasta, Chile as part of the VI Festival de Antofagasta 2014, in the Valentine's Day.[8] On March 11, 2014, the same day of the releasing of "Loco de Amor", Juanes performed "La Luz" at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.[9] The next day, Juanes performed the song in a concert in Miami, as part of a show that was broadcast live online for Terra Live Music.[10]

"Mil Pedazos" ("Thousand Pieces") is a song performed by Colombian siger-songwriter Juanes. It was released on March 7, 2014 as the second single from his sixth studio album Loco de Amor (2014).

Production and release

"Mil Pedazos" was written by Juanes himself and Emmanuel Del Real, member of the Mexican band Café Tacuba.[1] Production of the song was helmed by Juanes and co-produced by Steve Lillywhite. Matty Green engineered the song and mixed it together with Lillywhite. "Mil Pedazos" was recorded in two studios: Henson Recording Studios in Hollywood, and Perfect Sound Studios in California.[1] The song was included on Juanes' sixth studio album Loco de Amor, which was released worldwide on April 11, 2014.

Chart performance

In Colombia, "Mil Pedazos" debuted at number 10 on the National-Report ending April 14, 2014 and at 30 Latin Pop Songs chart.
