Week 2 Article Critique

Article: Microphyte.

  • Some (many!) claims are not supported (e.g. "They are specially adapted to an environment dominated by viscous forces").
  • There are odd, small mistakes (e.g. "...all the trophic levels about it" -> should be 'above'?).
  • Some information appears to be outdated (e.g. "...they represent an almost untapped resource" -> this is not true: algae based products are in just about everything, and biofuel is a growing industry).
  • The above also seems to be presented as an opinion, rather than a neutral statement of fact.
  • The article appears to cite pages from online news sites, rather than from primary literature.
    • In particular, the claim that "they produce approximately half of the atmospheric oxygen" is taken from a short article from a news site. This information (statistic?) could likely be found easily in primary lit, if it is true.
  • There is so much more that could be talked about (at least briefly) on this page!
    • What are the different kinds of microalgae that make up the microphytes?
    • How do microalgae blooms affect marine environments?
    • How are microalga utilized by humans (biofuel, algal by-products, etc.)?
