Fábio Ortiz Goulart (born June 30, 1997) is a Brazilian academic who researches in the fields of Comics Studies, Cultural Studies, Archaeology, Gender Studies and Queer Studies.
Early Life and Education
editGoulart was born on June 30, 1997, in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. He was raised in Rio Grande, RS, Brazil, where he spent his formative years. He is the youngest child of Celi Maria Lemos Ortiz, a sewing worker and homemaker, and Lindomar da Silva Goulart, a construction worker. He grew up in Rio Grande alongside his seven siblings, including his five brothers and two sisters. Goulart completed his primary and secondary education in Rio Grande before pursuing higher education.
Personal Life
editDuring primary school, Goulart met his future husband, José Endrew Vieira Maio (born 1995). The two began dating during the second year of high school in 2013 and have been together since then. They started living together in 2017.
Education and Career
editGoulart started his higher education in the Portuguese Language undergraduate program at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG). In the end of the first year, he left the program and in the same year (2015) he apply to a Bachelor of Arts degree in Archaeology.[1]
During his time as undergraduate student in Archaeology program, he started to research ritual plants used in afro-brazilian religions, but during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, Goulart has to left the research, and focus to another subject: comics. He obtained his B.A. Archaeology degree in 2021, with one of the first monographs about comics and archaeology. His monograph, The Gothic Death: the archaeology in and of comics, is a case study about Neil Gaiman's Death, a character from The Sandman comics, and proposes comics as archaeological artifacts.[2]
Following this, he pursued further academic endeavors and completed his master's degree in Visual Arts at the Universidade Federal de Pelotas (UFPel) in 2023, with the thesis Supermachos: masculinities in Grant Morrison's New X-Men (2001-2004). Which he analyzes the construction and representation of masculinities in the Grant Morrison's X-Men run.[3]
In 2022-2023, he was volunteer professor and researcher at FURG, teaching to Arcaheology and Visual Arts undergraduate programs until 2024. His classes has focuses on Identity, Comics, Historical Archaeology, and Historical Artifacts.[4]
Goulart continues to reside in Rio Grande, RS, Brazil, where he actively engages in academic research and contributes to ongoing discussions in the fields of Comics Studies, Cultural Studies, and Gender Studies.
