Binkii Reserve on the banks of the North Para River is believed to be named after Colonel William Lights' pet dog, a large Irish Wolfhound. Colonel Light who arrived at Kangaroo Island in his little ship RAPID on August 20 1836, was charged with the responsibilty of finding a suitable site for South Australia's Capital city.Light soon selected a site on the undulating plains which slope down from the Mount Lofty Ranges to the sea.Whilst designing the streets and suburbs of Adelaide Light and his surveyors were tasked with design of Gawler, South Australias largest country town and famously "Gateway to the Barossa".
