Juan David Tena, born on February 7, 1992, is a Colombian humanitarian photographer, photojournalist, and member of Colombia's diplomatic corps, currently based in Orlando, Florida, United States of America. He is known for his work documenting the lives of Indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities on the Pacific coast of Colombia and his efforts to visually represent marginalized communities..[1][2][3][4].[5][6][7]

His work has been published in international media outlets such as Nobel Prize[8], United Nations News[9], UNESCO[10], El Mundo Spain[11], AL Jazeera[12], the New York Times, the Washington Post, and France24[13], as well as on the front pages of Colombian publications including El Espectador, El Tiempo and Semana Magazine[1][3][14]

Life and Work edit

His family background includes his Colombian mother, Fanny Malpica Rodriguez, and his Spanish father, Jorge Humberto Tena, who abandoned him at the age of 8 years. Juan David Tena is the grandson of the Spanish composer Jose Maria Tena Hernandez.

Juan David Tena pursued his education at the Foundation University UNINPAHU, graduating with a professional degree in Photography[15].

Embarking on his career, Tena started as a photographer for Colombian newspapers and as official photographer of the National University of Colombia[7] and later gained prominence as the official photographer for the former president of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos Calderon, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient. In this role, Tena played a pivotal part in documenting various historic moments in Colombia's narrative, such as the peace process between the guerrilla group FARC and the Government of Colombia, Colombia's visit to the United Kingdom for a meeting with Queen Elizabeth II, Pope Francis' visit to Colombia, the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony in Oslo, Norway, and visits to the White House of United States of America with former president Donald Trump and President Joe Biden.[1][5][6][7]

On August 21, 2015, Juan David Tena faced a significant incident while accompanying former president Juan Manuel Santos Calderon. The event occurred when the bus transporting Tena unexpectedly veered off a street, descending 100 meters into an abyss. The aftermath resulted in Tena sustaining multiple injuries, including a complex fracture of his nose and numerous lacerations.[16][17]

Diplomacy edit

President Juan Manuel Santos Calderon appointed him as a diplomat in 2018. in the Consulate General of Colombia in Orlando, United States.[18][1][6]
