Blenheim Vineyards is a winery located in the Piedmont region of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the county of Albemarle County, Virginia. It is located within both the Virginia and Monticello viticultural areas.

History

edit

Blenheim Vineyards is located on the historic farm claimed by Secretary of the Colony John Carter who had a 1730 patent for 9,350 acres of land in Albemarle County, Virginia just south of Monticello. [1] Carter's grant included the estate known as Blenheim. Edward Carter, the son of John "Secretary" Carter, lived in the original Blenheim house, which burned.

Blenheim farm was purchased by rock star Dave Matthews' family in 1999. The Matthews family purchased the land to preserve Blenheim's historical significance and to eventually farm the land in some way.[2] The Matthews family made the decision to plant new grape vines on the remnants of an old vineyard that was on the property. Peter Matthews was the original winemaker at Blenheim.
