The National Achievement Survey is a large scale educational assessment survey in India conducted every three years. It is conducted by the Department of School Education and literacy of the Ministry of Education. It has been conducted eight times, since its inception in 2001. It assesses the learning capabilities and achievements of Classes 3, 5, 8 and 10 studying in State Govt. schools, Govt. Aided schools, Private Unaided and Central Govt. schools. It serves as a indicator for the effectiveness of education in India and identify gaps to help enact appropriate remedial steps.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has been routinely conducting National Achievement Surveys since 2001. The latest survey was conducted in 2021 after being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. https://dsel.education.gov.in/sites/default/files/update/RU2247.pdf

Administration and purpose edit

The survey includes three different parts for teachers, students and schools. All three of the groups receive appropriate questionnaires which include questions related to school and teaching experience, demographic status, affiliation status, family education among others. All responses are recorded in OMRs for further processing and evaluation.

The survey uses the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) database for targeting schools in different regions of the country.

NAS include subjects from varied fields which consists of mainly Language, Mathematics & Environmental Studies for class 3 & 5; Language, Mathematics, Science & Social Science for class 8 and Modern Indian Language, Mathematics, Science, Social Science and English for class 10.
