Article Critique

edit

I found interest in Labrador Retrievers when I got my own two dogs. By having a black and yellow Labrador, I have discovered a lot about their temperament, build, and instincts. I visited the Labrador Retriever page on Wikipedia, and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: citations, information, and the side articles.

Citations

edit

On this page, there are few citations under the "Name" section. There are no reliable sources proving the information provided. This also occurs in the "Origins" section. Both sections specifically have notes from Wikipedia stating that it needs to be improved by adding citations from reliable sources to improve the quality of the article.

Information

edit

Throughout this article, there was information that directly contradicts what another article says but has no proof. Under the section for their "Name", it claims that "The two breeds' names and origins were mixed once moved into England and the Americas. The dog from Labrador became the large, long-furred dog we see and know today, and the dog from Newfoundland became the Labrador", but there is no proof (Wikipedia). Not only was it not reliable, but I found it hard to follow as well. According to the Newfoundland Dog article, it came from the namesake showing that both dogs are related to one another. In order to improve this, there needs to be reliable citations attached to this paragraph.

Side Articles

edit

In these articles, for an informational purpose I believe pictures and captions should be directly tied into the subject. Under "History of subtypes", there is a picture of what claims to be Ben of Hyde but when you click on the link, there is no page that has been created to verify the information. Also, there are many pictures of dogs either just laying down or of a dog that an owner has added with no information regarding it.

Summary

edit

Overall, I believe this a good, informative article. it clearly states the difference between a show dog and a field dog and is able to describe the history and purpose of Labrador Retrievers. The article needs more citations in particular sections to be able to be reliable with the information it contains as well as back up its information. If this is supposed to be strictly an informational article, the recreational pictures of people's dogs need to have information attached rather than a fun caption.

I began this Wikipedia page as part of my English class. Some topics I'm interested in includes Law and Music. One thing I find interesting on Wikipedia is that the public is able to contribute to most pages. You can see different forms of research put together by different people to make a page on matters that people care about. I look forward to seeing how I can contribute to these pages as well as how I can learn from others.
