Introduction edit

My editing journey edit

  • Working for Wikimedia UK - the UK Registered charity that supports Wikipedia in 2012
  • Taught to edit by another editor - my first edit was adding a photo!
  • Attended some editing events and meetups
  • First proper attempt at wholesale article creation as part of Ada Lovelace celebrations in October 2014 - my article linked by a did you know on the front page!
  • At a Manchester Girl Geeks Editathon in November 2014 I created the article on Catherine Chisholm
  • In 2015 her contribution was recognised by the University of Manchester

I'll never know if the wikipedia article drawing together all the different sources of information about her life helped, but I like to think it may have, and in a small way I contributed to her legacy being properly recognised as a woman's contribution in the fields of science and medicine.

Your editing journey edit

  • Today can be just about what you can do today, but it can also be about becoming a volunteer
  • Why female editors are so important - because different perspectives will make sure wikipedia is truly the sum of all human knowledge. Different interests will ensure broader and deeper coverage. No, it's not that women don't like to write about tanks or that man don't want to write about fashion, but how the different access to experiences might mean we prioritise editing different stuff.
  • How does Art+Feminism fit into this
  • So, what can we do today (Understand why its important - 'every little helps' - and understand the possibilities)
  • ...and what can we do tomorrow (Try and use something you've learned, and try and come to another event or find out more)

Plan for the day edit

  • A basic overview of Wikipedia
  • Creating your account
  • Creating your account page
  • Time to play! The sandbox
  • What now; easy fixes
  • What next; time to make a difference
  • Editing!
  • Summary, and take home
