In the 1930s the London suburbs were rapidly expanding outwards, and to meet this need housing development and a new airport was proposed on the South East edge of London about two miles south of London.[citation needed]

In 1937 work began by the Southern Railway on the construction of a four platform station with two platforms on the Swanley to Otford line, and two on a new branch line to a new Lullingstone Airport.[citation needed]

By 1939 the station buildings and the first two platforms on the Swanley to Otford line were completed, but with the outbreak of the Second World War further work was suspended.[citation needed]

The introduction of the post war Green Belt Act 1947 prevented any further development work taking place. The station was abandoned and was demolished in the 1950s.[citation needed] The station canopy was removed and reerected at Canterbury East.[citation needed]

As at January 2012 substantial remains of the platforms and the abandoned concrete approach road remain.[citation needed]
