Oshigambo High School is one of the oldest schools in the Northern part of the Namibia, situated approximately 30 km east of Ondangwa in a village called Oshigambo.It first came into existence in 1960 and was in good management of its first principal Layha Lehtonen, a Finnish national. Oshigambo High school is considered as one of the first high school in northern Namibia and has been the best-performing high school in theoshikoto Region and particularly building a strong reputation in the promotion of science education in the northern regions of our country, Namibia. Oshigambo was one of the girls school in the northern part of the country, called " Okagumbo Kaakadhona" and a missionary, church school of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia.[1]

Tourist Attractions
editOshigambo High School have been and will be a very famous place due it's special tourist attraction features. The school buildings sandwich a river which flows from Angola to the Kunene River. On its shores there is the well-known huge fig tree "omukwiyugwemanya", this name is derived from the nature of the tree, the fact that its natural grew on a rock and due to those features most of the people known it with a name " Oshigambo shomukwiyu ngwemanya".
Flood Crisis
editIn 2006, Oshigambo River broke its banks for the first time in 50 years. The flood water separated the school from its hostel;[2] learners and teachers who stayed at the other side of the river had to either pass through the river at own risk, or had to walk a distance of about 3 km to get to school. A bridge had been promised to be built by President Hifikepunye Pohamba.
Academic Excellence

The school is one of the best in the country producing competitive high achievers every year. It is well known for its excellent grade 10 and 12 results and most of its graduates go and further their studies in South Africa. Over the years it has maintained great national position in the top 10 for the grade 10 results. It offers the science field in grade 11 and 12 which is a good choice for learners wanting to pursue medicine or engineering after high school.
The school receives voluntary teachers from the United States every 2 years. They mostly cater for the Math, English and Science subjects. It has about 300 learners with an average of 30 learners in each class and 20 teachers, of which most are foreigners from different countries such as Tanzania, Zimbabwe and so on.
Oshigambo High School 50th Anniversary
editOshigambo High school, oldest schools in Northern Namibia celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 24 - 26 September 2010. The main reason for the anniversary was to raise money to improve the development structure of the school, including the buildings and sanitation facilities. The anniversary was attended by most of well known people, politicians, business leaders and other professionals who passed through the school including Prime Minister Nahas Angula and Ministers Pendukeni Ivula-Ithana, Nangolo Mbumba, Erkki Nghimtina, politicians Ben Ulenga and Jesaya Nyamu among others.[3]
A long list of personalities from the corporate world who form part of the alumni include Sacky Nghikembua (Old Mutual), Leake Hangala (formerly Nampower), Penda Kiyala (Road Fund Administration), Festus Hangula (Social Security Commission), Kombadayedu Kapwanga (LLD Diamonds) and others.
Medical doctors, engineers, business people and even religious leaders and other professional who have passed the school complete the list. The Oshigambo High School’s history is testimony to years of achievements at one of the country’s greatest institution of learning in as far as education of black people in Namibia is concerned.[4]
Church
editThe school is an Evangelican Lutheran school, even though youWikipedia speaks only in the third person in articles, so don't say I/we/you might find teachers and learners from different religions. The school has a pastor who gives sermons to the learners every Sunday and provide all the services such as confirmation lessons. Learners are also required to attend and do morning and evening devotion every day from Monday to Sunday.[citation needed]
