Mersey Town Football Club is an amateur Sunday League football team based in Widnes, Cheshire. The club currently operates one open age side, and is a member of the Runcorn Sunday League Premier Division.[1]

History

edit

The club was formed in 2007 by youths in the West Bank area of Widnes, with the help of a local pub manager. The team entered the Runcorn sunday League Division One for the 2007/2008 season and finished second from bottom.

2008/2009 Season

edit

The club was saved from the brink of folding in pre season as a new manager raised funds to pay off debts. The clubs second season was more succesful, as the club gained promotion after finishing 5th in the league. There was also a cup run which saw the team beaten in the semi final.

2009/2010 Season

edit

This brought back memories of the clubs inaugral season, as the team struggled for results in the Runcorn Sunday League Premier Division and finished bottom of the league. There was a managerial change around towards the end of the season, which saw current manager James Griffiths eventually take over.

2010/2011 Season

edit

Due to the runcorn Sunday League not having enough teams registered it was decided that the Premier Division and Division One would merge to form a new Premier Division. Mersey Town managed to finish 5th in the league and had two cup runs that led to defeat in two semi finals. The end of the season was marred though, as the club faced mounting debts once again.[2] However, it was announced on 8th May 2011 that all of the clubs debts had been cleared.[3]
