Created in 1994 by Pierre Chabert, Airstar is the inventor and world leader of the lighting balloon[1]. From the beginning Airstar has decided to export its products all around the world. It has developed a network of subsidiaries and distributors[2] offering a full range of 360° diffuse and glare-free lighting balloons for the construction, safety, cinema, events, live entertainment and the architecture markets.

Airstar know-how in the engineering and assembly of high-tech textiles and films and in the construction of flexible structures also led to its development in the aeronautics and space fields[3] · [4].

In 2015, Airstar took over Zodiac Marine space division[5] and diversified its activities in the aerospace area: the subsidiary Airstar Aerospace Aerospace was born. Airstar Aerospace designs and manufactures tethered balloons, stratospheric balloons, airships and multi-layer insulations for satellites. The company has an aeronautical and space know-how at the cutting edge of the technology.

Today, Airstar counts 3 business units: lighting, architecture and aerospace. The company is represented by 13 subsidiaries and more than 120 distributors. There are 23 offices on 13 countries, 3 production sites in France and in the USA and 190 employees around the world.

Airstar Light

Airstar Light works on the event, the construction, the safety and the cinema markets.

Event

Inventor and world leader of the lighting balloon, Airstar lights up any kind of events since 1994. The Lunix is Airstar first lighting balloon to be marketed. Nowadays, the company offers a range composed by more than 15 products for the event market. Airstar lighting balloons are used to light, decor, communicate and signal in fashion, sports, hospitality, festivals and social or corporate events.

Among its most well-known references, Airstar illuminated Barack Obama Commander-in-Chief inaugural ball in 2013, Jennifer Lopez’s American Idol show in 2015[6], the yearly Saut Hermès[7] jumping competition at the Grand Palais, and the Singapore Grand Prix[8].


Construction and safety

Airstar offers a whole range of products dedicated to the construction[9] and safety markets, including stand-alone battery-based lighting solutions. The construction market gathers: road works, buildings and civil engineering structures construction, industrial maintenance, work on oil and mining sites, etc. The company works with groups such Total (group), Eiffage or Vinci SA. Airstar’s most powerfull lighting balloon enables to light up 24,000 m² in two minutes.

On the safety market, Airstar balloons are used as lighting solutions for civil security, homeland security or the armies. They are also deployed on natural disasters, crashes or used by emergency medical services to help rescue teams. During the September 11 attacks [10] Airstar offered its support to the rescue teams.


Cinema

Since its beginning, Airstar provide lighting solutions for the cinema industry. In 1997, soon after its creation, Airstar took part in the Titanic (1997 film) movie set by lighting the upper deck of the ship. In 2003, the Grenoble SME received through its CEO Pierre Chabert, the OSCAR Academy Awards®[11]. Airstar was awarded for the introduction of balloons with internal light sources to provide set lighting for the motion picture industry. Since then, Airstar provided the technical lighting of dozens of movie shoots, including Pirates of the Caribbean (film series), The Da Vinci Code (film) and Harry Potter (film series). Airstar also provides lighting sources on commercial sets, photoshoots or any broadcasted event.

Airstar Aerospace

Airstar Aerospace is an aerospace manufacturer and an expert supplier of flexible structures in all shapes and altitudes. With its 45 years history in the aerospace field (ex Zodiac Marine took over in 2015) and 20 years of successful trials in airships and aerial concepts, Airstar Aerospace is one of the world leading players in the aerostat industry. The company enjoys a strong support from the European space agencies, especially the French national center for space survey (CNES) or major private industrial companies such as Thales Group or Airbus.


Airstar Architecture

The Airstar Architecture business unit embraces two business lines: permanent lighting and mobile shelters.

The services offered start from the conceptual study and go through set-up, design, development and project management. Domes and Mobile Shelters

Airstar designs and manufactures dome and self-supporting and 100% inflatable mobile shelters and 100 % inflatable for the event, the aerospace markets, or any emergency use.

Within the context of using Airstar Dome during the Critérium de la première neige in Val-d'Isère[12] in 2015, Airstar received the ERP certification (Etablissements Recevant du Public, public access building)
