Bye Bye Boris is an important late 1980s-era DOS game in which the player assumes the role of a character named Boris whose goal is to emigrate from the Soviet Union to the United States. To do so, Boris must acquire a baseball cap, a suitcase, a passport, and an airline ticket and then make his way to the airport. The player rolls the dice and moves around the board to various squares. Red Square serves as a payday (much like the Go square in Monopoly). There are two KGB squares which subject Boris to searches which lead to the confiscation of his baseball cap, if he has it. There is also a Black Market square and various other squares which allow Boris to buy and trade items such as an apartment or an IBM PC. The Glasnost square gives news about recent happenings, e.g. "Election day...most candidates run unopposed...big deal" or "A small private plane lands on Red Square...oops!" The Afghan Service square typically says "Lucky... your number hasn't come up yet," but will occasionally require Boris to either present a deferment letter or pay a bribe; if he has neither, he loses the game. The Airport square allows Boris to win the game if he has all the resources he needs to leave the country.
