  • Sports medicine, also known as sport and exercise medicine (SEM), is a branch of medicine that deals with physical fitness and the treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise. Although most sports teams have employed team physicians for many years, it is only since the late 20th century that sports medicine has emerged as a distinct field of health care.

  • Sports medicine helps deals with injured people that plays sport or people that have sport related injuries.Sports medicine is not a single career, but instead a widely varied group of professionals all concerned with the health and well being of the athlete. People of all ages, and different activity levels look to a sports medicine provider for guidance regarding training techniques, injury prevention,and diagnosis and treatment of sports-related problems. It is also know as sport and exercise medicine (SEM).

  • The history of Sports medicine goes way back in time."The term was first used in 1961, only 54 years ago. It wasn’t until the early 20th century that sports medicine started to become popular. One of the first physicians responsible for sports medicine was A.V. Hill, who won the Nobel Prize of Physiology in 1922".[5]

It is a specialty of MDs, DCs, or DOs to treat athletic injuries. Areas of focus may be not only injury treatment but also injury prevention, peak performance of athletes and also nutrition for athletes. The main benefits of sport are improved health and fitness, and the development of social and communication skills. Sport medicine is an area where medical doctors give treatment of injuries from sports activities and normal day to day activities that would cause an injury. With obesity being on high alert in the U.S it is very important to participate in sports. Sport medicine is not just a single career it’s a career that takes a lot of focus because its main concern is the health of a person and their way of being. It starts with youth, high school, college students, and professional athletes, as well as individuals who exercise for health reason. You can tell the difference in people that do sports from the people that do not do them because they are less likely to end up overweight. If we are being healthy and exercising like we should be then we will live longer and likely to suffer from heart disease, strokes, high blood pressure, diabetes and a range of other medical problems.[6]
