Wikimania 2006 edit

In the course of informal discussions at Wikimania in Frankfurt the possibility of having Wikimania 2006 in Vancouver was raised. What makes Canada desirable for such a meeting is the capacity to draw delegates from the United States. For many overseas delegates, however, U.S. visa requirements make that country less attractive. All else being equal, Europeans see Vancouver as a more interesting Canadian city to visit than Toronto, the only other Canadian city to receive significant consideration.

Preliminary bids from various cities need to be made by Sept. 30, 2005. A short list will be drawn from those bids. Is there enough interest and energy to put together such a conference in Vancouver for August 2006? The people in Frankfurt put on a tremendous gathering, with a core organizational group of about a dozen people. Some 400 people attended from 52 different countries.

I expect that a North American Wikimania could be a little smaller, but we would still need a suitable facility. It would be good to know that such a facility is available for a conference; the type of youth hostel facility that was used in Frankfurt does not exist in North America. What would be the cost of hosting such a conference at UBC?

I'm looking for interest and commitment. To that end I am proposing a Vancouver meetup for Saturday, Sept. 24. If someone has a reasonably accesible place for such a meeting please let me know. (I live in Richmond, but something in the city of Vancouver would be more appropriate.)

Image copyright problem with Image:Gandhi_wheel.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Gandhi_wheel.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images on Wikipedia is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. Having been written almost 110 years ago, it's well outside the boundaries of copyright protection. According to law, the most protection this could have gotten was 95 years [1] Kickstart70 17:48, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi it is my website you have linked to the Molly Webster mention -- and I assume the source from which you copied the poem. I take some issue with this as I transcribe all these materials myself and in fact I own original copies of the books as well, not a small financial investment. Therefore, it is my work and effort you are utilizing here. It would have been a much-appreciated gesture to have been asked for permission to reproduce my transcription. I would appreciate a response on this. I do have a copyright note on my site. Thanks.

Quite simply, while you may have transcribed the poem, you do not own the copyright to it, which has long since expired and of which you are not the author. I do appreciate people who do these forms of transcription...I've done some myself and long support tasks like the Project Gutenberg. Since you have not signed here, I do not know who I'm responding to, or indeed if the copy I got of the poem was the copy you made available. --Kickstart70·Talk 18:48, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Oh, and here is a link to help you out: What about reprints of public domain works? Can I work from those, or do they get a new copyright?. Basically, your notes and additions, which I did not use, are copyrighted to you, but you cannot copyright someone else's work that has already entered the public domain. --Kickstart70·Talk 18:56, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

My name is Laurel O'Donnell lod@zapix.com, you will see my name at the website link -- I understand copyright law. And while I do understand public domain, do you think it is fair to just copy material from the websites of individuals such as me who have worked hard to transcribe and [at least in my case] have purchased the original materials? I do this to draw traffic to my pages and because I have a specialty interest in the topic. Though the original poem is indeed in the public domain, the materials in digital format are not free for the taking. But copying my work and adding it to wiki -- which by the way I support and contribute to -- I feel is just inconsiderate and unfair. By the rule you are setting it then ought to be perfectly fine to download and reproduce (for example) images from the US Census that Ancestry provides, or anything else from any collection of data that may be organized online. I would really appreciate it if you would remove the poem.

I understand that you don't think it's fair, but that is entirely your opinion. The fact that this is no longer under copyrighted protection means that the public use of it is fair. I was considerate enough to include a link to the cited source on the page, which drives traffic to you. I was considerate enough (and knowledgable about the legal aspect after research) that I did not make any copy of your footnotes or other copyrighted works. Your attempt to block the use of legal, public-domain use of a poem well outside of copyright protection is what's inconsiderate here. --Kickstart70·Talk 20:45, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

You say "materials in digital format are not free for the taking". Wrong. Copyrighted digital materials are not free for the taking. Material which is in the public domain due to its copyright having expired is not copyrighted, so it is free for the taking, regardless of whether someone has digitized it or not. You only get a copyright protection for your own work - if you copy something written by someone else, you don't get an extra copyright no matter how much work it took. The work is still copyrighted to its original author, unless that copyright has expired (as here). Otherwise I could copy a song from a CD to an MP3 and say that I now own copyright on the MP3 file, which I think the band would have something to say about. You could make the argument that even though it's not illegal, it's still wrong of us to do, but as Quadell mentioned it's no wronger than you copying it from the book (despite all the hard work the publisher went to to print it), and in any case there's nothing you can do about it. Hm. It looks like Laurel O'Donnell believes copying the transcription to be unethical. I'm not sure why. We all agree that Kickstart's copying of the poem from a website is as legal as O'Donnell's copying of the poem from a book, even though O'Donnell's required more work. I would say both copyings are equally ethical as well. It is, in fact, perfectly fine to download and reproduce any uncopyrighted information from any collection of data that may be organized online. We do this routinely at Wikipedia.

Regardless, the poem belongs on Wikisource, not Wikipedia, and it should be moved there. – Quadell ^{(talk) (bounties)} 21:07, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
