The Altamura cemetery is the cemetery used by citizens of the Apulian city of Altamura. It was built in 1942 and is still open today. It was supplanted the previous cemetery, that is the 19th century of Altamura, which is contained within the new cemetery.
The 19th-century cemetery area within the new cemetery is commonly referred to as the “old cemetery”. The entrance to the 19th century cemetery, now walled up, has become part of the wall. [1]
The design of the entrance to the new cemetery was strongly influenced by another early 20th century project by the engineer Alberto Gennarini. Gennarini’s design was never built, but part of it was reused for the 1942 cemetery.
