Manfred Markus (born 15 February 1941 in Hagen, Germany), Austrian linguist and university professor
Manfred Markus is a Full Professor and Chair Emeritus for English linguistics and mediaeval English literature at the University of Innsbruck (Leopold-Franzens-Universität). He was head of the English Department there from 1985-1995 and from 2005-2007 and is (co-)author or (co-)editor of some twenty mostly scholarly books (monographs and editions) and over a hundred articles.[1] He was a contributor to Harenbergs Lexikon der Weltliteratur (1989; 19 articles)[2], the Lexikon des Mittelalters[3] (J.B. Metzler, 1999; 8 articles) as well as Routledge Annotated Bibliography of English Studies (ABES) online (66 reviews of publications on Middle English dialectology). He also wrote over 60 scholarly reviews and shorter papers and, from 1994 to 2010, was co-editor of the book series Austrian Studies in English[4] (formerly Wiener Beiträge zur Philologie).
With a background in English and American literary studies, Markus after 1975 focused on linguistics, both synchronic and diachronic. The topics of his publications reflect the wide range of his philological interests alongside his teaching activities. Markus became widely known as the director of ICAMET[5] (the Innsbruck Computer Archive of Machine-Readable English Texts), with the two historical text corpora Innsbruck English Letters 1386-1698 and Innsbruck Middle English Prose on his record as compiler. His main achievement as a corpus linguist is the creation of an online version of Joseph Wright’s comprehensive English Dialect Dictionary (1898-1905), EDD Online 3.0[6], which, by its sophisticated software, allows for an innovative access to English dialects worldwide from 1700 to 1900.#
Education and career
From 1960 to1967, Markus studied philosophy, pedagogy, English, and German at the universities of Heidelberg, Reading/England (1962-3), and Göttingen. After attaining his M.A., he moved to the University of Regensburg, where he completed his Ph.D. in 1970 and was awarded his second doctorate degree (German Habilitation) in 1981. From 1974 to 1975 he had been Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst/Mass., USA. In 1981 he was appointed chairholder as a full professor of English linguistics and mediaeval literature at the University of Innsbruck/Austria. Markus has been visiting professor and guest lecturer at several international universities (in the USA, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Finland, Japan, Austria, and Czech Republic). He organised some conferences in Innsbruck and actively participated in many conferences abroad. In 2006, a festschrift was dedicated to him (Corpora and the History of English. (eds. Christian Mair und Reinhard Heuberger, Universitätsverlag Winter Heidelberg). He became emeritus in 2009 and continued to be director of the EDD Online project, initiated by him in 2005, until its completion in 2019.

Markus has been living in Innsbruck since 1981. He has both the Austrian and the German citizenship. With his wife Ingrid he has two sons, Dr Dirk Markus (born 1971) and Ronald Markus (born 1974).
