On 27 April 2009, Russian police officer Denis Yevsyukov opened fire at a supermarket in southeast Moscow, killing two people and injuring seven others, including three police officers who arrived at the scene. Yevsyukov, who claims no memory of the incident, was reportedly drunk and had a psychotropic drug in his system at the time of the shootings. In February 2010, he was convicted of two counts of murder and 22 counts of attempted murder, and was sentenced to life in prison.
The shooting led to the resignation of Vladimir Pronin, the head of the Moscow police department on 28 April 2009. The incident became cause for then-president Dmitry Medvedev to try to overhaul Russia's law enforcement and justice system.[1]
Background
editDenis Viktorovich Yevsyukov (Russian: Дени́с Ви́кторович Евсюко́в, born 20 April 1977) was born into a police family in Moscow. His father, Viktor Yevsyukov, was a police colonel in Kursk.[2]
Denis Yevsyukov rose to the rank of major. He was characterized as a personal protégé of Vladimir Pronin, who had been head of Moscow police department since 2001, and part of what was dubbed the "Kursk clan."
