Muscle cars are those high-horsepowered, American made, cars with the strongest engines on the road. The mid 1960s up through the early 1970s were the time when American automakers churned out the most powerful automobiles ever made in the US. What started in the 40s and 50s in drag racing and NASCAR hit their apex in the mid 60s. The love affair of young men, and some women, became fervent passion to have the fastest, strongest, car on the road - or at the stop light.

All of the major American automakers, (alphabetically Buick, Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, Pontiac and Plymouth - and to a lesser degree AMC and Mercury), invested heavily for brand recognition both on the race tracks and the street as a means of boosting overall vehicle sales. Offering higher horse powered engine options and handling packages soon became an art form and a bit of a treasure hunt for avid muscle car enthusiast who just had to have the fastest car. Automakers kept upping the cubic inch displacement of the engines while tuning the heads, carbuerators, exhausts and drive-lines, (transmissions and rear ends). At the same time, suspensions were dialed in to support the ever increasing horse power and deliver that power to the street. Next came reductions in weight as cars had less and less cast iron, steel and more aluminum and fiberglass.

As part of formal drag racing (NHRA - National Hot Road Association) and stock car racing (NASCAR - National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing), as even called out by rules of those organizations,

History:

As a young boy growing up in Bolton, Massachusetts, Jay was fascinated with cars. Jay would cut out pictures of cars from magazines and pin them up on his wall. It got to be that Jay could tell the year, make and model of virtually any car coming down the road. Even at night. After getting his license, Jay did as many car enthusiasts do and bought the best version he could afford of his favorite car, (77' Chevrolet Camaro), and fixed it up as best he could. Into his 20s, Jay set his sights on new projects with other cars he loved. Next up was a 73' Chevelle SS. With more "muscle", (more powerful engine), and a 4-speed manual transmission
