ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message edit

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:16, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled edit

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement edit

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

22:52, 15 April 2022 (UTC)

Pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity edit

Established policy provides for the removal of the administrative permissions of users who have made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period. Your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to the required activity level before the beginning of January 2023.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to engage with the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for re-engaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to re-engage with the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.

Thank you for your past contributions to the project. — JJMC89 bot 08:46, 1 October 2022 (UTC)

Help me! edit

Please help me with... I'm expanding the article Quercus look. I'd like to use the "Named References" feature for some information that came from a source I used earlier in the article, but when I've clicked that button in the edit window, the only named source is #1, the source used in the infobox. I don't know how to adjust the other references so they will appear on that dropdown list. Joyous! | Talk 00:18, 5 November 2022 (UTC)

Before you can select an existing source to be used again as a named reference, you (or some other editor) must give the reference a name. Names should be short and easy to associate with the reference they are used on.
I hardly ever use the Visual Editor and I don't see a way to add a name to an existing reference using the VE, but whether this failure is simply my mistake or among the many problems with the VE, I don't know.
So, open up the source editor and locate the <ref> tag for the reference you want to reuse and add a name so it looks like <ref name=shortname > - of course, you can use whatever you think is suitable instead of the name shortname. After that, you can switch back to the VE and it should allow you to select the newly named ref for use in a different place. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 02:29, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
Thank you! That worked. I appreciate the assistance. Joyous! | Talk 02:57, 5 November 2022 (UTC)

Thank you! edit

A quick thank you for your merge work on Conscious breathing, and for listing yourself on Wikipedia:WikiProject Merge with an interest in backlog management - music to my ears! I've been working on the backlog there for some years, mostly focussing on old and forgotten proposal, but it can sometimes be a little lonely; so having an (or another) experienced editor looking out at the tail will be very helpful. Just a note that I'm very happy to be disagreed with, and accept that there is often a wide set of reasonable actions! Klbrain (talk) 10:28, 9 November 2022 (UTC)

Thanks back, for the kind words! I'm looking forward to working with the Merge Project. Joyous! | Talk 02:21, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

Timeline of Pakistani history (1947–present) edit

Hello, Joyous!,

I deleted this page as a broken redirect. And then I noticed it had over 1,000 edits to the page which is unlike most of our redirect pages and it has a full talk page. The edit history says that you merged this article with Time of Pakistani history but this is a blank page which is why the redirect was broken. Did you merge it with a different article? In that case, the redirect and talk page should be restored and the redirect corrected. Thanks for looking into this. Liz Read! Talk! 06:49, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

Ugh! Sorry, yes, I mistyped the target name. It was a miserable slog of a merge and I just didn't notice. (month/day dates on the source had to be switched to day/month at the target for every dang entry that was moved over. And the bolding adjusted. And now I'm just whining....) Thanks for catching that, Liz. I should have checked. Joyous! | Talk 15:57, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

Manoj Kumar Yadav (politician) edit

Hey, Joyous!,

Another question! I saw you deleted Manoj Kumar Yadav and protected the page from being recreated. But I noticed that one version of the article at this page title was moved to this location. I looked at the version of the article that was just deleted and it looks like these two Manoj Kumar Yadavs are from the same general place but belonged to two different political parties. So, it's unclear to me whether or not they are about the same person. Since you closed the most recent AFD and handled this article, I thought I'd ask if you could follow up and see whether this page warrants CSD G4. Thanks for your help! Liz Read! Talk! 05:00, 17 February 2023 (UTC)

Unlinking deleted geostubs edit

Thanks for all of your work in closing geography AfDs. I noticed that you've been unlinking deleted stubs from lists like this. In situations where the location fails verification as a "populated place" and turns out to be a ranch, natural feature, etc, would you consider removing the entry entirely instead? I've spent a lot of time cleaning up the Arizona place lists and would appreciate it if closers could help keep them clear of erroneous items. –dlthewave 03:19, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

Undelete or Draftify edit

Hey Joyous, I see you deleted a page Jayaram Kailas in which I participated. The user:Akevsharma was so desperate in the discussion, so I noted him and checked his account in detail. I wanted to make a major thing into your attention. The AFD nominator user:Akevsharma is also a suspected sockpuppet of blocked sockpupper Farzanfa007 link - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Farzanfa007 . He is manupulating many discussions. I noted you said my points were not taken into consideration as I am a new user. Additionally you said his movie page was previously deleted. when I checked it was deleted once and that too on the same day and few time before you deleted this page, in that page too user:Akevsharma aka user:Iamfarzan manupulated the discussion and I doubt the IPs voted are from his side. If you still doesnt go with what I said, you may consider it draftified as he is a notable filmmaker, who is a National Film Awards jury member, Kerala Film Critics Association Award winner, and 2 movie director etc. and its possible that the page can have improvements. Hope Justice prevails in wikipedia too Christopheronthemove (talk) 05:11, 14 March 2023 (UTC)

Addition : User:Akevsharma who nominated the page Jayaram Kailas for deletion has been confirmed as a sockpuppet and has been blocked few days before. So the discussion might be manupulated by him in some form and you can see lot of IP votes in that discussion which says delete, which might be from his side. I request you to undelete the page Jayaram Kailas as the discussion might be manupulated and this is the case or you may draftify it as I wish to work on the article Christopheronthemove (talk) 18:07, 18 March 2023 (UTC)

I'm reluctant to reinstate the article even in Draft space right now. You yourself are suspected of acting as a sockpuppet, for one thing. During the deletion discussion, I relied more heavily on the comments of editors who I know are "themselves,", and those editors strongly recommended deletion. At the moment, there are so many accusations of "you're a sockpuppet, no YOU are" that I prefer not to reinstate the article. Feel free to bring up the matter as a deletion review if you feel that I closed the discussion improperly. Joyous! Noise! 18:40, 18 March 2023 (UTC)

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

  Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

I see your close of this AfD recently. Was wondering if you saw the keep votes were two SPAs and one user with less than 200 edits. CNMall41 (talk) 19:29, 20 July 2023 (UTC)

I did, and I wavered back and forth with that one. I'm not sure it was the wrong decision, but not sure it was perfect, either. Joyous! Noise! 20:31, 20 July 2023 (UTC)
Understood. And, not questioning your decision as on its face it looks like a clear keep based on the votes. Was wondering if there is a way to open it back up for more comments. Either way is fine but wanted to ask. --CNMall41 (talk) 16:30, 21 July 2023 (UTC)
Let me check in with someone who regularly closes the more... interesting... discussions to see what they think is the best way to move forward. Joyous! Noise! 20:45, 21 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. Like I said, not a big deal. My main concerns is that there is likely a COI gaining the system and I hate seeing anyone using Wikipedia like that. --CNMall41 (talk) 22:33, 21 July 2023 (UTC)
Hi! Thanks for your note @Joyous! Commenting here to keep it central. While I don't disagree with your close, I see the point @CNMall41 is making here. With their nom really only countered by @Hkkingg:'s informed !vote, we have a slight delete from Oaktree. My concern with Littlefish's !vote is the sourcing. Are they reliable enough and do they provide proof he meets musical notability? I probably would have relisted this to see if we could get more engaged input, but with school and northern hemisphere summer holidays, we're at a lull in participation. If relisting weren't an option, I'd have closed this as no consensus as there doesn't appear to be one among established editors. That said, I land where CNM does. Not a big deal, just not ideal outcome. Neither discussions nor closes are perfect, and there's no BLP issue that makes this a vital issue to solve. Star Mississippi 02:08, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
I am the last voter on the page. The 2 Keep voters before me looked suspicious also, but I based my arguments strictly on the subject meeting WP:MUSICBIO. I have no doubt if it is reopened the community will keep this one as he obviously meets several of the criteria from WP:MUSICBIO. Some of the supporting citations were Youtube videos, but they obviously showed the subject playing in a popular TV shows and it was not an interview, so it is a valid citation to prove that he was in some TV shows. I assumed an admin would have noticed the suspicious votes and would have discounted them. I think that Joyous! has done a good job here. Hkkingg (talk) 08:44, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
I don't mean this as a slight but with so few edits I think you may have a misunderstanding of the criteria you cited in your keep vote, which is one of the issues. WP:NBIO is presumed notability, not guaranteed. He would not meet 6 "for playing in Glenn Miller Orchestra" as the criteria says he must be "a musician who has been a reasonably prominent member of two or more independently notable ensembles." Also see footnote 5 of that criteria. For 12, he must be "a featured subject of a substantial broadcast segment across a national radio or television network" which he was not. For 4, he was a member of the ensemble that toured, not the main person of the tour. A drummer for a rock band that tours is not notable based on touring with the band.--CNMall41 (talk) 17:29, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the input. You are correct in your assessment. Wikipedia is never perfect. And, I likely wouldn't bat an eye but the participation comments have my Spidey sense going so it's less about Joyous!' close than the actual rationale left by keep voters. While my next comment may sound like an argument from authority, I think the vote from Oaktree is more reliable based on their extended participation in AfDs and the statement that there is a lack of coverage (which I agree with based on my AfD recommendation). --CNMall41 (talk) 17:36, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
Note that he was also a member of the Aretha Franklin band, so that makes it 2 ensembles. In addition he's got these articles here that would also help with notability:
https://www.latfusa.com/article/2017/1/aretha-franklins-sideman-paul-the-trombonist
http://sleepingbagstudios.ca/paul-the-trombonist-journey-to-the-world/
http://www.projectrevolver.org/news/revolver-premiere-paul-trombonist-releases-popcorn-butter-ahead-album-release
https://internationalmusician.org/paul-nowell/
https://www.buzzfeed.com/utaiswa/a-new-taste-to-jazz-and-hip-hop-2vnsl
https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/siri-sends-hilarious-text-guys-wife-starts-playing-trombone/
So I didn't solely vote on the criteria of MUSICBIO, but also based on his coverage. Hkkingg (talk) 17:47, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
This actually shows further misunderstanding of the guideline. The Latfusa article says he worked with Franklin, not that he was a member of the ensemble. Many of the cited sources are also unreliable. For instance, see the comment at the top of this reference. These are all things that can be argued in the AfD discussion if it is re-opened. --CNMall41 (talk) 17:53, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
@CNMall41 @Hkkingg just making sure you saw I relisted the AfD with Joyous' blessing. No further input needed unless you want to, just a heads up. Star Mississippi 03:05, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up. With Hkkingg's permission, I would like to move their comments and my response to the discussion. On a side note, I want to reiterate that I am not questioning the close of Joyouse!. I think it was done in good faith so I appreciate the understanding and the communication. --CNMall41 (talk) 04:08, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
100%
I think we all just want the right "answer", and if a few days help with that - whether it's the keep Joyous landed on or something else - it's worth it. Star Mississippi 03:30, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
What is your thought on the SPAs and votes with only a few hundred edits opining in the discussion? I am concerned that we don't have enough people with an understanding of notability guidelines opining which makes it look like an AfD full of Keep votes without solid logic. --CNMall41 (talk) 19:06, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
The most recent one at least attempted a source analysis, which was a good sign. I'm assuming there's off wiki canvassing, but not enough to ECP it I don't think Star Mississippi 19:15, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. I would agree about the off wiki canvas. Also not quite enough for SPI I guess. --CNMall41 (talk) 19:23, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I'm guessing it's meatpuppetry so an SPI won't be particularly helpful. And it's so backlogged, the AfD will end first Star Mississippi 19:30, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

Cody Bowles edit edit

Hello Joyous. Here is a link to support my (taken down) edit on Cody Bowles of the band Crown Lands. Please reinstate my edit with this link to substantiate the claim that he is a pretendian. Thank you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHi3QvWd4hU 71.7.195.233 (talk) 19:55, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi, and thanks for your note. I' sorry, I don't see that it's a strong enough source to hang such an accusation on. We have pretty strict standards for controversial claims in the articles for currently living people. The video is equivalent to a blog post: there are a few interview clips with some graphics added in. There's no actual PROOF. Joyous! Noise! 20:34, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
