Philippine -Mexican Relations

The Philippines and Mexico had close relations for nearly 3 centuries from 1527 to 1821). The Philippines was for a long time until 1821, governed from Mexico which was then called New Spain. Spain was able to establish the Philippines through Mexico. The first three major expeditions from Mexico to the Philippines was the Saavedra in 1527, Villalobos in 1543 and Legazpi in 1564 which were financed by and manned by mexicans.

Mexican Inquisition

The Inquisition of Mexico was represented by a commissary in Manila. Only caucasians(Spaniards,French, Irish,etc) who were suspected of heresy were shipped to Mexico City for trial.

Economy

The Philippines was dependent upon Mexico. The Philippines was financially dependent upon Mexico. The Mexican viceroy was ordered by the King to send a royal subsidy(real situado)to Manila annually which averaged P250,000 and was taken from Mexico's treasury. A galleon trade was also established from Manila to Acapulco with goods from China and the Philippines.
