Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife

Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife (CCFW) is a non-profit organization established January 18th 2002.1 The CCFW started as an idea by Carol Kiefer and Susan Scott.  Both had been active in conservation efforts in the city of Cape Coral. Susan Scott had been setting up meetings in the city parks on wildlife conservation. Carol already had several neighbors helping her to clean owl burrows. Significant in the burrow cleaning was Carl Eason.  These volunteers started meeting regularly at Rotary Park. From these volunteers came the Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife.  The goals of the organization include: promoting the understanding of Cape Coral’s wildlife and wildlife habitat; to publicize the interdependence between man, wildlife and ecological systems; to publicize laws regulating wildlife to foster compliance with such laws; to educate the public concerning wildlife, ecology and to promote values that will inspire others to take action to improve the environment. CCFW holds a special interest in the Burrowing Owl. This owl is one of the smallest species of owls. It is only nine inches tall, has a short tail, and weighs about 4 oz. It is listed as a "species of special concern" by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.2 Cape Coral is home to possibly one of the Worlds largest populations of Burrowing Owls. Experts estimate that there are more than 1,000 nesting pairs in the city. In addition to being good neighbors, the owls are good for Cape Coral’s economy. Birding enthusiasts come from all over the world to view and photograph the owls.3 The Organization assists in the care and maintenance of the owl burrows throughout the Cape. Education classes are available to the public on the care, maintenance and establishment of these burrows. The Organization sponsors the Burrowing Owl Festival. This event hosts environmentally friendly groups promoting the wildlife and ecology of Southwest Florida. The Membership is actively involved with the Florida Yards and Neighborhoods (FYN) Program. This program is a partnership between the landscape industry, the University of Florida Cooperative Extension Service, Florida’s National Estuary Programs, Florida’s Sea Grant College Program, and various State and local environmental agencies. The program focuses on yards, as they are the first line of defense for estuaries, rivers, lakes, aquifers and the City’s canal system.4 The current Directors of the organization are Michael Orchin PD, Charles Evell VD, Ruth Parks TD, Sue Porreca SD, and Kathleen Orchin CSD. 5
