My name is Jay Gertzman. I recently edited the entry on Samuel Roth, because I am writing a biography of him. I first developed an interest in him due to his "piracies" of Lady Chatterley's Lover(although the book could not be copyrighted due to its being declared obscene). Roth's publication was a betrayal of Lawrence but ironically made the novel accessible to people who could not otherwise get it, and also led to European editions that did pay Lawrence's widow. In my book on erotica publishing in the 1920s and 30s (cited in my Wikipedia article), I wrote about Roth's career during that period.

I am a retired English prof from Mansfield U, which is part of the state of Pennsylvania system of public education. Please contact me at jgertzma@earthlink.net or PO Box 257, Edgewater NJ 07020-0257.
