For my topic I want to create a new page that explains white identity development and the popular theories that describe this development. These theories include Helm's (1995) Model of White Identity Development and Rowe, Bennett, and Atkinson's (1994) White Racial Consciousness model. Originally I thought of adding to the pages of White privilege and Whiteness studies, however, both of these pages are very controversial and the Talk pages are more debate than research. Therefore, I felt it would be beneficial to first create this page to describe how white people come to understand their identity and privilege. Then this page could be referenced and possibly added to those other pages. Apart from describing the above theories, I also want to show the application of these theories in research and in our everyday lives. As someone who identifies as white, I hope to educate others on how to understand privilege and dismantling racism in our societies.
