Biography edit

Accepted at Chelsea School of Art (1978) as the sole student studying lasers, video and holography. Returned to painting when his lecturer broke his spine. Moved from the life room under Euan Uglow and Miles Murphy to narrative painting studio under Ken Kiff. Graduating year with Yuko Shiraishi, Mark Wallinger, Matthew Hale, Keith Ashley, Mark Vollans, Chris Romer, Eva Bosch. In their graduate year of 1981 Blank, Wallinger, Hale and Bosch were early exponents of New Figuration in English Painting. The term at that point was unstated while the work referred to the human figure referenced from classical / mythical figures, memory, dreams, visions rather than direct observation or photography. Blank and Wallinger were included in the 1981 New Contemporaries Exhibition at the London Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) where Blank was awarded the National Painting prize.

From 1981 to 1987 while continuing to paint Blank experimented with photography, film and video. In 1984 a school program of Video Animateurs was implemented by Blank as part of a community video project from Colchester Filmmakers at The Minories Art Gallery Colchester, Essex UK. The project integrated the use of video as a teaching and learning tool within primary school classes. The resultant work was shown at the 1984 British Film Institute's Society for Education in Film and Television (SEFT) Conference, Bradford, the Edinburgh Film Fringe and presented to Eastern Arts and the Inner London Education Authority for development.
