Michael Stein Older brother of Gertrude Stein; with his wife Sarah established a large private collection of impressionist art, particularly of the works of Henri Matisse. Michael and Sarah lived in Paris from XXXX to YYYY. In 1906 they moved to Palo Alto, California, where their collection greatly influenced artists Robert Motherwell and Richard Diebenkorn. The collection later formed the basis for the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.[1]
