The Blue Jays-Rangers brawl was an incident in United States Major League Baseball at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas on May 15, 2016. The fight was instigated by the Texas Rangers' pitcher, Matt Bush, who 'allegedly' threw at Toronto Blue Jays' outfielder José Bautista, hitting him with a fast ball pitch likely in retribution for Bautista's home run which was hit in the previous year's post-season match-up. Bautista, who was awarded first base on the play, was subsequently attempting to slide into second base when Texas Rangers' second baseman Rougned Odor tried to hit Bautista in the head with a throw, supposedly to first base. When Bautista turned towards Odor, Odor threw a vicious punch, hitting Bautista in the face. This action 'cleared' both benches as the two teams rushed onto the field of play. Odor could then clearly be seen swinging punches at numerous Blue Jay players and he was subsequently suspended 8 games and received a fine from Major League Baseball. The Texas Rangers have been widely criticized for using the final game of the two teams regular season matches to attempt their retribution towards Bautista and their behavior was described as 'ugly and unfortunate' by Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. The Toronto Blue Jays and the Texas Rangers fought once more later in the baseball game.[1][2]
