Tod Neugeboren (born April 16, 1965) is an American comic book writer, best known for his controversial runs scripting Amazing Arachnikid, Rage of the Revenger, and The Return of Crimebuster. He also created the titular character of Captain Miracle. He is notable for the liberal use of retcons in his writing, and his often-confrontational online demeanor.
Early life
editNeugeboren was born in East Great Falls, Michigan, to German-American parents. He graduated from East Great Falls High School, and attended Great Falls Community College.[1]
Career
editNeugeboren's first professional comics work was for Dark Side Comics, on a backup story "Whatever Happened to Crimebuster?" included in an issue of Dark Side Presents. He was hired by high school acquaintance John Geoffries to script The Amazing Arachnikid, which was the subject of controversy when he revealed in #375 that Arachnikid's beloved aunt was really a clone of his late mother, who had secretly been responsible for the accident which gave him his powers. Neugeboren was replaced by writer-artist Jim Bourne for the landmark issue #400. He replaced Antoine Belladonna, co-creator of the Revenger, on Rage of the Revenger, when sales on the new series declined. Retconning the hero's origin to reveal that he was secretly an agent for the nefarious League of Mercenaries, he revitalized the series' sales. He also wrote The Return of Crimebuster, which revived a once-popular but forgotten boys-adventure character from the 1940s and 1950s. Captain Miracle, his attempt at a creator-owned and self-published superhero, sold poorly.
Controversy
editA notable controversy in his career happened when, in an interview published in Whassup magazine, Neugeboren referred to Revenger creator Antoine Belladonna as a "has-been" whose style of writing "put readers to f*cking sleep".[2]
