Jack DuArte (Born John B. DuArte II on July 23, 1941) is a writer of historical fiction with three novels in a series published under his name. He also wrote a series of guide books under the Insider’s Guide Series.[1]

Early life, education and military service

DuArte grew up in New Orleans and attended Jesuit High School.[2] He attended the University of Kentucky and later graduated from the University of Evansville with a BA in Journalism. Upon graduation in 1965, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force and was trained as a weapons controller. He was sent to Udorn RTAFB in Thailand in June 1967, and was assigned to the 621st Tactical Control Squadron in operations against North Vietnam. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his meritorious service during his deployment with the 621st. The 621st also received a presidential unit citation for their efforts during the Vietnam War. He returned to the United States in 1968 and was stationed at North Truro AFS, MA until his release from the service as a Captain in 1969.

Writing Career

DuArte’s first byline came at the age of 14 when he wrote sports for the Times Picayune in New Orleans. He has written in numerous mediums since that time and continues to write for the Gold Medal Wine Club, Santa Barbara, CA, at this time. During his college days, DuArte edited and published a college humor magazine, MOOT, at the University of Kentucky. When he returned to New Orleans in 1971, DuArte became a weekly columnist (Gastronomy) for the Times Picayune and later hosted a weekly talk show on WWL Radio covering the New Orleans entertainment scene.

During the 1970’s, he combined with Jimmy Brennan on the DuArte-Brennan Guide to New Orleans Dining and in 1the 1980’s with Monty Joynes on the Insider’s Guide to New Orleans Series.

In 2005, DuArte fulfilled a lifelong dream with his first historical fiction novel, The Resistance, the first installment of his World War II Trilogy. In 2009, he completed work on Singapore! and his third installment, Spitfire is currently awaiting printing.

Family Life

DuArte was born with a Portuguese-English background. His father was a first generation American who was a sociologist during his lifetime. His Mother was one of the first nurse-anesthetists to be licensed in Louisiana. Their sage advice was the inspiration DuArte needed to begin his writing career. DuArte has two sons, John III and Steven. John is a multi-Emmy award-winning writer for the popular Jeopardy television show while Steven is a master surveyor and acoustical guitarist.

DuArte and his wife, Susan Snowden DuArte, live in Lexington, KY with their miniature horse Darleigh and dogs Brewster and Tucker. [7]
