Chandr Hass||[1] is an iconic heritage liquor drawing on the recipes preserved by the descendants of erstwhile royals of the state. In 2006, the Chandr Haas, along with seven other heritage spirits from different royal families, began to be produced by the Rajasthan State Ganganagar Sugar Mills Ltd, at its distillery in Jaipur. The method of production—including the use of traditional ware for distillation and fermentation—and the ingredients remained the same, but molasses made way for spirit. The three erstwhile classes of liquors—ikbara for the hoi polloi, dobaara for the officers, and asaav exclusively for the royals—underwent a distillation to emerge as a shared swig of royal history. ||[2]
Royal families across Rajasthan had their own liqueur versions, with Mahansar’s even going back to the 1770s. However, it was after the establishment of a state-of-the-art distillery in Jodhpur in 1924 that commercial production took off. The brews were banned as the nation got independence, and they instantly retraced their steps to the royal houses that they had trickled out of, to bide their time as ‘baap dada ki daaru’ for royal posterity. ||[3]
After a gap of 10 years, the Rajasthan excise department has once again launched its range of Royal Heritage Liqueur. The liqueur range was initially launched by Rajasthan Ganganagar Sugar Mills (RGSM) in 2003 with much fanfare, but it was shut down in 2008. The excise department has now started producing the heritage liquor made from ancient royal liqueur recipes; albeit on a smaller scale.
Production has been initiated at Royal Heritage Liqueur Distillery in Jaipur, a unit of RGSM.||[4]
The brew of Chandr Haas has come from the erstwhile royals of Kanota, a princely unit of Jaipur state. Jagmohan is from the Udaipur royal family, and Kasturi and Saunf belong to the Jodhpur royals.||[5] This winter drink is prepared by mixing 80 different ingredients, including spices, sandalwood, ghee, dry fruits,Jaifal, Safed Musli, etc. No additives or colors are used in the preparation of this sweet, strong and herbaceous drink. It can be consumed with some water or soda and crushed ice. The ingredients used in this drink are used to cure debility, weakness and increase the vigor and potency. ||[6] ||[7]
