Aleksandar Colovic is a professional chess player, holding the Grandmaster title. In 2016 Colovic was elected as a General Secretary of the Association of Chess Professionals and in 2019 he was elected as a President of the same Association.
Personal life
editBorn in Skopje in 1976, holding the BA in English Language and Literature. Colovic is fluent in English, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Macedonian, Serbian and Bulgarian language. He has one sister - Ana Colovic Lesoska. She is a Macedonian biologist and in April 2019 she was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize.
Chess Career
editColovic is a chess professional for more than 20 years. He has participated in more than 200 international chess tournaments, where he won dozens of them. Colovic won the Malaga Open in 2005. He participated in 3 Chess Olympiads and 2 European Team Championships. Among his other best achievements are the 18 national team titles in Macedonia, and he also has scored the best result ( according to percentage ) on board 4 with 5.5 out of 7 at the European Club Cup in 2015 in Skopje and he had the best result on the Macedonian team (7 out of 10) at the 42nd Chess Olympiad (also known as the Baku Chess Olympiad).
As a coach, he also has many successes. His student WGM Marina Brunello won a gold medal at the 43rd Chess Olympiad and in that same year IM Francesco Sonis became a European Champion in the category U16. In 2017, coaching the Macedonian women national team, he made history by sharing the 20th place at the European Team Championship in Crete in 2017. He also won the Italian Women Team Championship with the Caissa Italia Pentole Agnelli in 2017.
He is the author and founder of Macedonia's First Chess Blog https://www.alexcolovic.com/. The blog is founded in 2014 and it has been voted among the best chess blogs since 2016. He is a regular contributor to the British Chess Magazine since 2016 and also writes for several other chess websites.
